Project: Jason from Newlook Concrete & Kalmar Construction enlisted our concrete grinding and polishing services at the new Massey campus building

Requirements: The floor was to be ground to expose the natural stone of the concrete. Aproximately 1100 sq/meters of flooring, both down and upstairs. It inludes hall ways, retail shops and dinning cafe areas. The specifications for this job was a low sheen polished floor with out the normal high polish with decretive control joints.

Result: We had great results with this job. The grind went well leaving the desired stone results with over 95% of the floor. The control joints took on a special meaning on this job. We spent 2 days cutting them all out to 10mm to show a large grid pattern and to fill them with a expandable filler that could be polished. We used a nano polish product from Nanoset to give the floor stain protection. The low satin sheen was achieved by taking the polish to a 400 grit finish only, instead of the usual 3000.

The how to on polishing concrete

How to achieve smooth, shinny, desirable concrete polished floors.

1. Concrete placement. The most important step towards getting the results your after is the pour or placement of your concrete floor. Take time to find the right stone and the right look, combine this with well placed concrete and you are 50% of the way there. Incorrect concrete placement and the job will come up less than ideal e.g, if your looking for consistent stone and there are screed marks.

2. Grinding. So your floor is down and it is at least 7 days old. The idea behind all polish jobs is to make the surface flat. This is achieved by either the concrete placer or by grinding using a cross hatch pattern with 4 head planetary grinders. Salt and pepper or marble finishes will require the placer to do their job perfectly. Grind the floor down to the desired stone then remove the scratches up to 120 grit

3. Pit fill – Filling of the holes in the concrete – There are many ways of filling the holes in the concrete but for the better part for the DIY, use FLC then once dry, remove the FLC by grinding off with 120 grit.

4. Harden – Use of densifyers to harden the concrete matrix. This is poured onto the concrete floor, keeping the concrete wet for 15 mins. The chemical will react with the lime in the cement causing the concrete to become harder. The harder the concrete the better the shine.

5. Polishing using resin bond pads. Start with the lowest resin pads working your way to 800 or 3000, with each time removing the previous scratches caused by the prevous grit.

6. Clean and add your polish for floor protection. Once dry buff for a good looking luster.

Repairing old concrete

I often get asked if I can repair less than ideal concrete. Well the answer is YES, we can repair pretty much any concrete with-in reason.

A lot of old floors, old pubs, garages and the likes can have some pretty bad looking concrete. Underneath all that glue lays something exciting and ready to be exposed.

Here at NZGrinders we deploy some pretty heavy tactics in bringing this type of dusty, pitted and soft concrete back to life. We make it dense and shinny, a floor the owner is proud to have.

Here we have a few pics in the slide show, showing the before then the after.

You can see that this floor was covered in old glue. We ground this off to expose the natural stone. The floor looked terrible with extreme pitting and holes.

Using special chemicals we hardened the floor. This floor was given special care and attention. We then used a solution to pit fill the floor to a glassy finish without any holes. You can see this in the next photo. We then polished the concrete and added a full stain protection polish to give the stones their natural hues.

Got an old floor ? Call the experts on 0508 NZGRINDER or email me from the contact page

Requirements: Grind and polish the floor for a indoor/outdoor swimming pool area. All control joints had to be tidied up by re-cutting and filling.

Result: The 50 Sq/m concrete floor took shape rather quickly. All control joints were pre-filled and then the grinding process took place to expose a heavy consistent grind. We found the concrete grind had left the floor with lots of air pockets. We carefully filled these. The floor was then harden and taken to a 800 finish with high detail given to corners and edges. A water based polished was then burnished into the floor to give the shine and luster the customer ordered.

Project: Fresher - Polished concrete for supermarket

Requirements: Using grinding and concrete polishing to create a flat diamond ground floor that is able to be cleaned and is presentable and tidy to the public.

Result: The 500 SQ/M floor had intense carpet glue that had to be removed with diamond blades, even before polishing could begin. A light grind was achieved without showing too much stone. The floor was taken up to a 400 finish and then protected with polish that was burnished into the concrete substrate. The job took 3 days. The result is a satin finish that is customer friendly, clean and tidy. A must for supermarkets.

Project: Whitaker Construction asked us for a hygenic epoxy coating system for a new toilet facility for the council.

Requirements: To coat the floor in a 10 year warrantied coating system that can withstand constant foot traffic and cleaning. A specific colour was also chosen.

Result: We ground and prepared the floor. A high build solvent free epoxy was used to prime the floor using vinyl flakes to give texture and depth and anti slip. The floor was then over coated using BASF’s high build epoxy system. This gives the floor a very high abrasion resistance.

Project: Van Dyck’s concrete polish with stain colouring, full stain protection, coving and epoxy coating for mixing room

Requirements: Using a colour stain system with solvent based polish from Superfloor, we were to polish 700 sq/meters for protection against food spills and to be easily cleanable and slip resistant. Epoxy floor coating was also needed in the mixing room. The epoxy floor was done in BASF Mastertop 1080.

Result: This project used a mix of different flooring systems. Ramps and coving made from resin and polished concrete for the factory floor. The polished floor was shaved to produce a bronze Superfloor finsh. All control joints were correctly filled to move with the 30MPA concrete without failure and provide a simple hygienic solution that made the floor cleanable. The customer Marcel was so impressed with the results we did another 500 sq/meters. This brought the other areas of existing concrete floors up to a cleanable polished concrete system.

All the coving was done in concresive 25/25 with a arrow head, this was joined into a chase 10mm cut to anchor the coving to the floor while still retaining the polished concrete.

The epoxy mixing room was done in a epoxy paint system to save money instead of the usual screeds

We are very please with the results and the job flowed smoothly with no issues of time restraints

Project: Armstrong Downs new event center required a salt and pepper concrete polished finish for the new cafe’

Requirements: Grind the top surface only and produce a water proof polished floor that can handle high foot traffic and food spills.

Result: Working within another tight time frame of 2 days our team produced exciting results of shine and beauty. The floor was gently ground to remove only a small fraction of the surface to give a salt and pepper finish the best we could with the concrete supplied. The floor was treated with a methanol based polish to stop food and liquid spills from soaking into the pores of the new polished concrete, an important aspect for this job.

Project: Exhibitions area, approximately 450 sq/meters – Remove old concrete sealer and polish to give a robust concrete polished finish that compliments the art on display.

Requirements: Requirements: Grind off existing epoxy sealer. Leave the natural cracks and joins in the concrete. Then diamond polish to give a rustic but elegant finish that has good light reflection and compliments the modern design of the museum. All concrete grinding was to be completed in a completely dust free environment due to the sensitive nature of existing pieces in other areas of the museum.

Result: Our first exercise was to remove the existing coating, level and flatten the floor. There was a heavy emphasis on being dust free while grinding. We achieved this with our state of the art vacs that let us dry grind. We also found extensive water damaged concrete that was caused from rain at time of pour that required special chemicals to harden and strengthen. With our strong grinding team we made it happen with-in the tight working-time frames to deliver the floor back to the New Plymouth Council within the required 3 days. The gloss shine is a brilliant semi satin finish that is proving to be excellent for the council’s needs.
